If you start at 6 on the number line then move three backwards you end at 3. Therefore three is the answer

the two negative signs in the middle mean you add, this looks like this
-4+3=-1


subtracting a negative from a positive number

Its the same as adding -1 to -4
so it looks like this
-4+-1=-5

subtracting a positive from a negative number

4-(-4)

with two negative signs next to each other you add 4 and 4 to get 8
it looks like this
4+4=8
6-(-8)=
6+8=14
